Our Experts Offer a Comprehensive Approach for Treatment of Cherry Angioma in San Antonio Clinic

Cherry Angioma(s)

Cherry Angioma (s) are benign, dilated blood vessels seen on the surface of the skin. They range from bright “cherry-red” to purple-bluish in color and are usually small (1-5mm) in size. They are the most common type of angioma seen in adults over the age of 40. 70% of adults over 70 years have cherry angiomas. These cherry-red “bumps” most often occur on the trunk and frequently on the scalp, face, neck, arms and legs. They are not painful or contagious but may bleed heavily if injured. The cause of Cherry Angiomas is unknown.

Treatment for Cherry Angioma (s)

Treatment of a cherry angioma (dilated blood vessel) is usually considered an elective cosmetic procedure. Dr. Ghohestani or one of his associates, in our San Antonio clinic, will evaluate the areas you are concerned with and suggest the most appropriate method of treatment for you. The four different treatment options include:

  • Electrocauterization: It consists of touching the skin with an electric needle and destroying the cherry angioma (dilated blood vessel). A topical numbing agent may be applied to decrease discomfort.
  • Liquid Nitrogen: Liquid nitrogen is a cold, liquefied gas that is sprayed on the skin with a spray gun. This works by freezing and destroying the cherry angioma (dilated blood vessel).
  • Surgical Excision: This is a sterile surgical procedure where Dr. Ghohestani will surgically remove the cherry angioma (dilated blood vessel) and suture the area closed. This procedure will require a follow up visit within 10 days.
  • Laser: Laser uses a beam of concentrated light to close down the cherry angioma (dilated blood vessel). This is the procedure of choice because laser is the only non-scarring treatment option. When the angioma is flat, typically only one treatment will be needed. However, if it is raised, several treatments may be required. A topical numbing agent may be applied before the laser treatment to decrease discomfort.
